Central Executive and Target Selection in Visual Working Memory

چکیده

Abstract The goal of this study was to investigate if the selection external information for storage in visual working memory requires control by central executive when categorization targets is guided instructions. design experimental 3 (concurrent task) x 2 (instruction). Forty-eight university students saw eight colored shapes, four them surrounded square outlines. Memory assessed using a recognition task. Targets varied with instructions: were presented within squares first block and outside second block. There three concurrent tasks: no task, articulatory suppression, backward counting. Performance measured hits, false alarms, corrected recognition, sensitivity (A’), compared within-subject ANOVAs. Results showed main effect only lower performance counting condition all measures. These results suggest that does not perceptual filter, corroborating earlier results.

Dynamic interactions between visual working memory and saccade target selection.

Recent psychophysical experiments have shown that working memory for visual surface features interacts with saccadic motor planning, even in tasks where the saccade target is unambiguously specified by spatial cues. Specifically, a match between a memorized color and the color of either the designated target or a distractor stimulus influences saccade target selection, saccade amplitudes, and l...

Executive and Perceptual Distraction in Visual Working Memory

The contents of visual working memory are likely to reflect the influence of both executive control resources and information present in the environment. We investigated whether executive attention is critical in the ability to exclude unwanted stimuli by introducing concurrent potentially distracting irrelevant items to a visual working memory paradigm, and manipulating executive load using si...

Brain imaging of the central executive component of working memory.

This review presents neuroimaging studies which have explored the cerebral substrates of the central executive component of the working memory model proposed by Baddeley and Hitch [Working memory (1986); Recent advances in learning and motivation (1974)]. These studies have demonstrated that different executive functions (manipulating and updating of information, dual-task coordination, inhibit...

The Effect of Working Memory Rehabilitation on Visual Memory and Memory Span

Introduction: Age-related cognitive decline or cognitive aging is largely the result of structural and functional decline in specific areas of the brain, but lifestyle also contributes to this cognitive decline. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of working memory rehabilitation on visual memory and memory span in ageing.  Methods: This was a quasi-experimental study with pret...

What part of working memory is not working in ADHD? Short-term memory, the central executive and effects of reinforcement.

Deficits in Working Memory (WM) are related to symptoms of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). In children with ADHD visuospatial WM is most impaired. WM is composed of Short-Term Memory (STM) and a Central Executive (CE). Therefore, deficits in either or both STM and the CE may account for WM impairments in children with ADHD. WM-component studies investigating this find deficits ...
